Hi Everyone
We made it back! Left Sydney on one of the hottest days of the year yesterday; it reached a sweltering 42C which is well above 100F. We had a great final day on the beach all day Saturday only leaving there at 4.30 pm. Our flight was at 9.45 pm via Dubai and we got into Birmingham at 11.00 this morning. Our body clocks are so confused as we have been travelling for 24 hours but due to the 11 hour time difference although it's only 3.15 in the afternoon here our Aussie clocks think it's 2.15 am on Monday morning. Business class was great again; worth every penny!
Still feeling well and very pleased to get the good news last week!
See ya

Hi Everyone
Well we’ve just woken up on our last morning in Aussie after a great week’s training from the great man himself Kip McGrath. It’s been invaluable, learnt so much and feeling ready to go now with new vigour! The weather has been perfect 30c + everyday and we’ve made the most of the beautiful Newcastle beach right outside our hotel after work. Kip, Storm and Dug McGrath have been great hosts, and it’s been fantastic to get to know them better.
The last scan result is just in and is fine. The oncologist is happy; I am described as ‘stable’. We assume this means nothing is on the move; the main tumour is still there but not growing or spreading, in fact still ‘dormant’. Thanks Lord!
We so couldn’t stand the thought of ‘cattle class’ on the way home that we’ve paid for an upgrade to ‘Business Class’ ourselves, decadent I know but after last year we promised ourselves we’d not scrimp, live for the moment, and enjoy some of that insurance claim! A few quid on moving from self catering and economy to sea view hotel and business class is well worth it when you’ve spent a year with a chemo drip in your arm and honking in a bucket!
The lifestyle here is amazing, we love the heat, the beach, the beautiful people but, worry not, the UK is home despite the awful weather and recession. We’re not about to move out here but might relocate the holiday place to somewhere hotter! Brittany is beautiful but a bit wet.
In our absence Chloe has passed her driving test – WELL DONE! My mum and dad have done a great job looking after the kids (with Chloe) and Amy has been an absolute hero keeping the office going. Thanks all! We couldn’t have done the trip without you.
Been able to read a bit whilst away and would recommend both books. ‘Dear Fatty’ which is Dawn French’s autobiography and ‘It’s Not About The Bike’ by Lance Armstrong and his fight with cancer. The Lance Armstrong book is particularly poignant for me; his prognosis was serious but actually better than mine – he got angry, not really felt angry myself but understand.
Well we don’t leave here until this afternoon at 5.00 so have a day on the beach (hard life); we get back home on Sunday afternoon at about 2.00.
See you all.

Aussie Life - So Cool!
Well here I am wide awake (thanks to jetlag) at 5.00 am Aussie time Monday morning which is 7.00 pm Sunday in the UK. We set off from Birmingham at 8.20 pm Friday picked up by a limousine courtesy of Emirates airlines and the ridiculously lucky free upgrade to business class. I am NEVER, EVER flying cattle class again EVER! Business class is so civilised, so grown up so gloriously, pompously middle class; it is to be utterly recommended. It has to be said I am easily impressed and a complete tart for posh stuff but business class takes the biscuit (and that biscuit is on a real bone china plate with a real Egyptian cotton napkin all at 35,000 feet and 500 miles an hour!).
Oh my, the seats in front are so far away you can’t even reach them with your legs stretched out. The seat is a scientific wonder, electronically adjusted and turns into an almost flat bed. It has a built in ‘vibro massage’ which is interesting and slightly disconcerting – should you have this much fun on a plane? We have 600 channels of ‘on demand’ entertainment at our fingertips albeit with all the naughty words dubbed out (Muslim airline). It took me a while to realise this and initially assumed (by some strange coincidence) that every actor had a slurring speech impediment. Saw five films, the inevitable documentary about tornados (or something) and an episode of the Simpsons where Homer has a bypass operation. Can’t remember the flims much; vaguely remember Nicholas Cage, Ricky Gervais and I think Thora Hurd – but surely not??
All the meals were fantastic, served on real china plates with little table clothes and you have a choice! (Feed me well and I’m yours!). Wine list is exquisite (airline is not too Muslim thankfully), and ongoing drinkie-poos and nibbles are yours on demand. Now I know on long haul flights you are supposed to stay hydrated, drink water, avoid booze etc. , but spare me! It’s free. Say no more! So Florence and I flew for 24 hours stuffing our faces, mildly inebriated and being vibro-massaged (did I mention the bone china plates?). We stopped in Dubai and headed straight to the business lounge for more of the same but sadly lacking the vibro chair.
Lots of aesthetically pleasing airline staff, a beautiful African stewardess that was totally ‘fancyable’ and served the drinks with panache with her hand behind her back. A sad lack of male eye candy for Teresa which we put down to the fact that as a Muslim airline they were all probably straight and therefore as drab and ordinary looking as me!
Already decided that we will mortgage our souls and pay for the upgrade for the return leg too. If I ever mention that I’m planning to fly in economy to Australia, slap me hard and remind me of the vibro-chair, the African stewardess and the free booze.
We checked into our hotel by 9.30 Sunday. Fantastic view of the beach from our room. We had to shop as I forgot my trunks. What to buy? All the cool guys wear board shorts here; all the old farts speedos which the Aussies call ‘budgie smugglers’. Bought board shorts in an attempt to look cool and hip! We then hit the beach. Weather was fantastic clear blue skies, sunshine 25C. Oh my goodness the beach was full of beautiful, impossibly young people. All tanned and honed to perfection; all blond and tousled and trendy. Instantly felt old, fat and dull. Revived my commitment to get a six pack and perhaps (if I can persuade Teresa) a mid-life crises tattoo. Something meaningful like John Wesley on horseback or Billy Graham addressing the multitudes at Harringay. Seriously, comments please on if Dave should get a tatt? Great shock factor – why not? Want to be young perfect surfer with white teeth and pecs. Teresa wants me to be one too! Why, oh why, do we live in the UK? It’s cold, it’s grey, it’s all cardigans and Tupperware. DULL. Going to move here; even as I write the prom is full of joggers and the surfers are already out. Seriously the weather is fantastic, the scenery glorious, the people laid back and the tans perfect! Time for a change!!!
Had a fantastic meal last night all very ‘nouveau-cuisine’, great wine (having sobered by now from the flight) and again a view of the beach.
So we’d better get up. Get breakfast and get to work. It’s a hard life.
PS had the scan on Friday before we left. No results yet though!

Bad David
Sorry Guys
Not blogged for while and loads to tell! Got told off (in a nice way) by friends at Flitwick Methodist (where I was preaching on Sunday) regarding my lack of blogness.
Well, life has been mad since we returned from France - first things first - HEALTH. Had a full ENT check up last week with regards to the swollen gland. The consultant doesn't think there are any problems but I am scheduled for a mini ultra-sound scan of the area the week after next. Had anther endoscopy this time down my nose. I worked out I haven't got an orifice they haven't stuffed a camera up (or down) in the past year. I'm intimately acquainted with all my innards - we are 'fearfully and wonderfully made' aren't we? Particularly nice nose bits I'm told 'very clean'?? Why would they not be??
My full body scan is on Friday - the result won't be for a week or so, perhaps even as late as the 30th. They are looking for anything nasty growing again - this is routine, not because they are worried about anything specifically (apart from the terminal cancer that is!). As things stand I'm on no medication at present which is not bad for saying they said I might not 'make Christmas'. If the scan is clear I'll be back at work 100% full-time though it'll be Kip McGrath work not consultancy. Those days are over, thank God!
We were invited back To Aussie for some more Kip training last week and head off this Friday. All very last minute. The airline had no economy tickets left so we've been ungraded to business class for free - jammy or what! Spending next week in Newcastle NSW - Hunter Valley; where we went in August. Got a nice hotel on the beach. I'll take and post some pics. Role on the sunshine - brill!
Church life continues to be a blessing had a great united service with Potton Vineyard and Marston Vale churches on Sunday evening - really enjoyed it - great worship band. Had a brill XLR8 youth group last night. Looking forward to seeing the building programme get underway.
Talking about buildings, the re-furb of our Kempston offices starts today so even as we speak the electrician is putting in new sockets, new furniture arrives the week after Aussie.
Had a day at Cliff College last week talking through my MPhil with my supervisor and hero Phil Meadows. It was so helpful; really started to get some some structure and direction into my thoughts at last. Two years, part time will see me with a MPhil to add to my Masters - love the study - obsessed with theology - it keeps me sane. Apologies to my suffering friends, wife and church who I constantly bore with it all!
The kids are well. Amy is looking after the Kempston office as Hannah (our fantastic administrator) is due to have her third baby any time now. James Fokkens (Amy's husband) is now at Nandos in the Milton Keynes Snozone finishing his training. James and Carys are both back at school of course and doing fine!
Florence (AKA Teresa - my wife) is working hard and being a support to everyone as always. What would I do without her?
Well think that's everything.
God Bless
Dave

So friends,
Saw the New Year in at the cottage in Brittany (at 11.00 pm French time) with my lovely family, broke the Loge Goar deathly quiet with some dodgy and highly unpredictable French fireworks. The finale was a large rocket that shot off at a ridiculous angle and hit the main power line for the village. We made our calls and then watched the fireworks and celebrations from London.
We drove from Brittany to Paris via Rennes and Le Mans and arrived at Euro Disney at around 5.00 pm on New Years Day. Teresa had booked us into the Disney Newport Bay Club Hotel with a fantastic view of the park and a very frozen Lake Disney. We were too knackered to do much on New Year’s Day so hit the sack early after dinner. The hotel was horribly, stupidly busy. Like total MADNESS! I have never seen so many people from so many places. Also is it my imagination or is nose bleedingly expensive? £1,000+ for two nights and a three day park pass. On top of that the tickets for the excellent Buffalo Bill Wild West show were another £250! Even considering that tourist rates for a euro are now effectively £=euro it’s still a lot. HOWEVER – we had a fantastic time; don’t want to sound mean. In fact we had a first rate and really memorable few days. It was freezing (complete with real snow) so very festive, Christmas lasts here until January 6th so we’ve had a double dose of Santa and carols this year. It was Carys’ birthday today – she was 8 – what a great way to spend your birthday at Disney. I won’t bore you with all the things we did ‘cause we did it all.
We headed off to Caen at tea-time and battled with the Paris Peripheral Motorway (Peripheric), got a good view of the Eiffel Tower and arrived in Caen about 9.00 pm. Having a night in a Novotel before catching the 8.00 am ferry back to Portsmouth in the morning. Here I am, with my wife and babies only 3 kms from where my Grandfather is buried having been killed here a few days after ‘D’ day. How the world moves on!
Don’t know if you are into New Year resolutions but I am. Going to shift that excess stone in weight, join the gym (again), spend more time with my family on the boat, plan business trips to be as stress free as possible. No early starts, hotels the night before for my sanity! All this is, of course, dependent upon getting the ‘all clear’ from the full body scan. If I do then back to work and all systems go, if they find anything nasty then I’ll do everything apart from the work. Also need to ‘beef – up’ my prayer life afresh!
I know I’ve said this before but knowing your days might be limited is strangely liberating, almost exciting. Feels like living on the edge. The days of honking and sleeping are soon forgotten though at the time are not nice. Remind me should things get nasty that I’m ‘liberated and excited’ won’t you?
Thanks for checking in guys! God Bless. Dave

DISNEY
At Disney now!
Taken me about an hour to get on line!
Had a great great day but SO cold - real snow, so all very festive. Went to the Buffalo Bill Wild West show and meal tonight. Decided I want to be a Disney Cowboy - very glamorous! How dull can our jobs be????
We are here tomorrow too, heading home on Sunday so I'll blog more fully then when the Internet is more reliable.
See Ya

France!
Hi Guys
In France now and it is beautiful! Sunny but very, very cold! The cottage was fine despite being locked up and empty for 8 weeks, we lit a fire but with so many heaters on we tripped the main switch, drank a dram or two of scotch and soon felt toasty warm.
As you have probably worked out no tests on my neck took place before the holidays, in fact still haven’t even got a date so they can’t be too worried. Tell me it is a lack of worry and not a lack of resources. Actually it doesn’t feel as painful or ‘lumpy’ as it did which is good news.
We had a good Christmas starting with a great Candle Light Carol Service on Christmas Eve ; Teresa and I led the Christmas Day service which was as mad as ever; you’ll be pleased to know that this year we didn’t lose Jesus! (See entry for last Christmas). Mum and Dad stayed for the whole holiday with James F and Amy joining us on Christmas Day after their service at MKCC (Milton Keynes Christian Centre). I had man flu and didn’t see past 7.30 of any evening.
We decided at the last minute to throw a trip to Disney into the equation so we are off to Disneyland on Jan 1st for 3 days; it is Carys’ birthday on the 3rd and we are always travelling back from France. This year she’ll get a real celebration! We’ll be stopping right in the centre of the park in a posh hotel – brill!
Woe the decline of the pound, we tend to use our credit cards out here but I converted £50 on the ferry and didn’t even get 50 euro! Eek! It feels a bit expensive out here these days.
OK guys assuming I don’t have a mini scan on my neck before the full body scan on the 13th this is the next date in the diary. To be free of any sign of anything ‘nasty’ at this stage would be a miracle so I’m praying for one (again). We are both looking forward to a great 2009. Going to join the gym again, finally decided that I will do my MPhil after all, going to wring as much out of life as I can. Word of advice to all friends – LIVE FOR THE MOMENT – God only knows what the future holds. If you fancy doing something, do it (assuming it’s legal, healthy and won’t upset God). Mind you if you take the illegal, unhealthy and God upsetting things out of the equation you are not left with too much are you. Discretion and moderation then and don’t scare the horses!!!
Off to Quimper for some French sale clobber this afto. If you are trying to ring the cottage sorry but the phone is on the blink, mobiles are OK though.
God Bless everyone – keep enjoying your Christmas holidays.
